Dear Reader:

The world is changing at an accelerating and incredibly fast pace. Waking up each morning, it's hard to believe what I see all around me, and I suspect that you, like me, struggle with the challenge of keeping up. As this change impacts the profession of estate planning, one thing is clear: there has truly never been a better time to be a member of a peer-to-peer learning organization like NAEPC.

NAEPC is not just an organization; it's an 'association,' which implies inter-member connection and interaction. Our ecosystem includes 275 estate planning councils and their estimated 30,000 multi-disciplinary professional advisors, over 2,000 Accredited Estate Planner® (AEP®) designees, Estate Planning Law Specialist (EPLS) certificants, and the many generous sponsors that support our programs and that of the councils. It also includes past, present and future leaders, boards, committees, and task force members at both the national and local level and, of course, those inducted into the NAEPC Estate Planning Hall of Fame®, recipients of the Hartman Axley Lifetime Service Award, and those who have been honored by the affiliated councils.

We are all united together by the pursuit of excellence in estate planning. However, excellence can mean different things to different people and is evolving quickly as the world wrestles with remarkable disruption, co-creation and social change. To keep up, as individuals and an association, we must be innovative, collaborative and provide value at an unprecedented speed and scale. NAEPC provides a myriad of opportunities for members of our ecosystem to harvest the collective wisdom of peers from across the country.

We are always open to hearing new ideas from the membership of NAEPC and encourage open communication with the national board of directors. Working together, I feel we are well-prepared to thrive regardless of the change coming our way.

Finally, I am excited to announce an upcoming initiative geared toward younger and unpublished professionals who have an interest in co-authoring an article for consideration for an upcoming issue of the NAEPC Journal of Estate & Tax Planning. NAEPC board member and Estate Planning Hall of Fame member Martin M. Shenkman, CPA, PFS, MBA, JD, AEP® (Distinguished) has agreed to assist. Participation will be limited to the first four individuals and those with interest should email admin@naepc.org.

Who Are We?

Enjoy this republication from August 2014
By Lawrence M. Lehmann, JD, AEP®

PhotoWe, as estate planning professionals, all share a common goal to help our clients make wise choices about holding, growing and transferring their wealth. It is important to remember that our clients need to achieve clarity of purpose in order to make meaningful choices. What is a client's true motivation to engage in estate planning? Is it only estate and income tax avoidance or is it something much more important?

The most helpful thing we as estate planning professionals can do for our clients is to begin our conversations with one simple question: Why? Why do you really want to plan your estate? You might be surprised at the answers you receive. Some individuals may have concerns about their own financial independence. Some may have concerns about the needs of family members. Some have passionate philanthropic goals. Some may focus on the meaning and value of their own lives. Starting the estate planning conversations with "Why" before explaining "How" can assure us that our recommendations are consistent with our client's own mission, vision, values and goals.

Unfortunately, planning often begins with conflicting recommendations by professionals from different disciplines. The usual result is nothing gets implemented because the client does not understand why each professional is making different recommendations.

NAEPC promotes the collaborative approach to estate planning by members of all estate planning professions in order that the client achieve the best possible estate planning result through actually implementing a well thought out estate plan. What a better way to collaborate than by starting the process with a clear understanding of the client's mission, vision, values, and goals. With the entire team understanding the client's "why", the team will have the information to make a unified recommendation of "how."

Lawrence M. Lehmann, JD, AEP® is a past president of NAEPC and remains active on the Council Relations Committee.
