Guy E. Baker,
CLU, ChFC, CFP, MSFS, MSM, RHU, CRWC, AEP®
BTA Advisory Group
Guy's experience in the business planning and estate planning
field is extensive. He has completed many estate plans for
families with a net worth in excess of $25,000,000 working
with Tim Voorhees, a nationally known estate planning
attorney. Guy helped found the National Association of Family
Wealth Counselors and was a founding Board Member in The
Stewardship Alliance - a group of professionals dedicated to
providing legacy and wealth planning to high net worth donors
to Christian ministries. He completed the Professional
Mentoring Program in 1999 and has lectured at various estate
planning council meetings, spoken at several CLU Institutes
and was featured on a several CLU Televideo Conferences.
Guy formed BTA Advisory Group,
a multi-disciplinary organization serving the needs of wealthy
families and owners of closely held businesses. Each of BTA's
sister organizations is managed by an experienced professional
and partner. The services include The Stewardship Advisors, an
estate and legacy planning consulting firm; BMI Consulting, a
national management consulting firm specializing in the
succession and compensation issues and problems facing
closely-held businesses; Baker, Thomsen Associates, a
compensation and benefits consulting firm; Baker Jensen
Investment Advisors, a registered investment advisor; and BTA
Advisory Group, an insurance and financial products marketing
company.
Guy holds a BS/Economics in
1967 from Claremont McKenna College and an MBA/Finance in 1968
from the University of Southern California. Guy earned his
Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) in 1972 and became a
Chartered Financial Consultant 1981. He also holds a Master's
degree in Financial Services (MSFS) and Master's in Management
(MSM). In addition, Guy is a Certified Financial Planner
(CFP), and a Registered Health Underwriter (RHU). He has also
earned his Certified Family Wealth Counselor designation and
Registered Investment Advisor.
Guy earned Life and Qualifying
membership in the Top of the Table (TOT) in 1977 and has
qualified consistently ever since. The TOT is a membership
category of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) an
organization Guy first joined in 1970, his first full year in
the insurance industry. Guy has served on numerous MDRT
committees, including serving twice as a Divisional Vice
President. He has also been a chairman of several committees
and task forces, most recently selected as the MDRT
representative on an industry task force focused on addressing
significant industry distribution problems. Guy also served
five times on the MDRT Annual Program Development Committee
and was the TOT Program Chairman in 1995.
In 2006, Guy was elected
Secretary of The Executive Committee of The Million Dollar
Round Table - the Premier Financial Services Organization with
over 35,000 members. Guy will be President in 2010. Guy has
served as MDRT Foundation President in 2000. The MDRTF is a
national foundation with assets over $10,000,000. MDRTF
disburses over $1,500,000 annually to qualifying community
projects. He was a founding member of The Global Gift Fund and
initiated several other Foundation programs that helped it
reach the Focus 2000 objective.
Guy is an active member of the
Advanced Association of Life Underwriters (AALU), a Washington
D.C. based organization dedicated to working with Congress to
formulate industry favorable legislation. Since qualifying to
join AALU in 1977, he has been elected to the Board of
Directors and served as the Regional Chairman for the AALU
Political Contacts Committee.
Guy served on the Board of the
National Association of Family Wealth Counselors. He was
elected President, serving two terms while helping to build
the association into a national organization. Guy has received
many financial industry awards, including the Pacific Life
Preston Hotchkis "Distinguished Achievement Award", which
resulted in a $10,000 gift Guy designated to be used to
purchase land in Mexico for Mexican Christian Missions. He was
inducted into the Pacific Life Hall of Honors recognizing his
35 years of leadership among Pacific Life agents and was
recognized as the Pacific Life Agent of the Year as well as
the Orange County Agent of the Year. He was Pacific Life's
leading field representative for 10 consecutive years.
He was elected President of the
Orange County Life Underwriter's Association in 1977 and
served as the State regional LUPAC Trustee.
In his community, Guy is an
Elder in Grace Church after serving as Chairman of the Deacon
Board. He is also a Founding Trustee for Grace Classical
Academy, a private school for families seeking a classical
education. Guy serves as Chairmen of American Family Living
and is on the Board of the Mission Hospital Foundation. He is
also on the Corporate Leadership Board for BIOLA University.
Over the years, Guy has served
in many capacities - including Chairman of the Board for
Mexican Christian Missions in San Diego, an organization which
develops and supports over 60 churches and pastors throughout
Mexico. He also served as a major gifts fund-raiser for the
Orange County Center for Performing Arts and on the fund
raising committee for South Coast Repertory. He has also
served as an Advisory Board member for the South Coast YMCA, a
Board member of Orange County Teen Challenge and worked with
many other civic and community organizations including Past
President of the Claremont McKenna Alumni Association and a
member of CMC's Board of Trustees. He was recently asked to
serve on the Advisory Board of the Torrey Institute at BIOLA
University. He was founder of the Claremont McKenna Alumni
Association's Commercial Affiliates, a networking organization
for the alumni.
A frequent writer and speaker,
Guy has spoken to advisors in more than five countries. His
most recent book is "Market Tune-up" a recounting of lessons
he learned that helped him stay Top of the Table. In addition,
Guy wrote "Investment Alchemy" a guide to stock market
management. Other books by Guy include, "Why People Buy",
"Baker's Dozen - 13 Principles for Financial Success", each
with over 20,000 in print. His best sales idea is The Box, an
easy to understand discussion about the fundamentals of life
insurance, having distributed over 500,000 pieces throughout
the financial services industry. In addition, he has developed
several seminar packages to educate 401(k) investors plus an 8
cassette seminar training album called "Market Tune-up", to
assist professional agents in their quest to increase
productivity and re-engineer their practice.
Guy and Colleen have been
married since 1967 and live in San Juan Capistrano where they
have four children and ten grandchildren.
